As the first coffee chain to ban disposable coffee cups, they have prevented 100,000 cups from going into landfill. Their reusable cups are recycled and can be bought at cost price or loaned from any branch. Other ways Boston Tea Party achieves their low levels of plastic waste include using large milk containers as opposed to multiple plastic bottles, having biodegradable bags and takeaway boxes, and not purchasing paper straws (even if there is a shortage of paper straws available). To motivate staff to reduce plastic waste, they have recycling incentives and disciplinaries for staff who ignore recycling policies.
